The discussion on prostitution as a form of employment is one that has been gaining currency. The sex industry which involves X-rated movies, other forms of pornography and persons working in brothels as exotic dancers is not discouraged, but is seemingly accepted. It is sometimes frowned upon by some societal organizations, including the church. Both male and female prostitution is nothing new, and has been around for ages. It has been outlawed, scoffed upon and in some cases accepted as a practice. Generally, prostitution like homosexuality is denounced by law, but nonetheless continues to be practised, seemingly without prejudice.
Human trafficking in Barbados
Female sex tourism In Barbados: a postcolonial perspective : WestminsterResearch
Barbados is a source and destination country for men, women , and children subjected to trafficking in persons , specifically forced prostitution and forced labor. Researchers identified patterns of transactional sex within families, most often by adult male caretakers such as step-fathers, as well as child prostitution outside the home. Women from the Dominican Republic , Guyana , and Jamaica voluntarily enter Barbados as illegal migrants, and some expect to engage in prostitution. Some of these women are exploited in forced prostitution subsequent to their arrival. Some other foreign women who entered the country illegally are exploited in involuntary domestic servitude in private homes. Foreign men have been transported to Barbados for the purpose of labor exploitation in construction and other sectors.
Female sex tourism In Barbados: a postcolonial perspective
The prevailing image of sex tourism is one in which a Western male sex tourist travels to the developing world—particularly Southeast Asia—to find an otherized female sex worker. Early studies on sex tourism tended to focus on this image, posing the worker as a victim of both economic and patriarchal power. However, since the mids, there has been growing acknowledgement that sex tourism is a dynamic feature of the tourism industry, with gender variables constantly changing. One now has the opportunity to study either one or both sexes together, theorizing how behaviors and roles are given gendered meanings, how labor is divided to express gender and gendered differences symbolically, and how social structures incorporate gender values and convey gender advantages in hierarchical relationships.
Nearly sex workers and victims of human trafficking are stranded in Barbados without access to food, shelter and other essential supplies. Anti human-trafficking specialist Dr. Olivia Smith says the growing humanitarian crisis is pushing the marginalised women back into a life of sex work. Jump to. Sections of this page.
